the following articles were sent to my gmail address,or scrapped on my scrapbook by faculties.

FYI
the matter in this sections is solely from the faculty side.only minor details have been changed in the interest of safety of the faculty.

From faculty(written by a faculty member)
Now certain things that faculties have to bear in SCET
THE WORKLOAD
accg to Mr Joseph all faculties here are underworked !!!! They hav hardly got the AICTE working hours not more!! Well Mr Joseph this is the point wr I doubt whether U hav ever taught in GEC, Thrissur!! Taking an hr of class = 3 hrs of preparation; now taking an assumption that ur faculties are all genius's they still need 1 hr to prepare which means 1 hr = 2 hrs of work! (the 2nd hr is conviniently not accounted); a tutorial hr is considered 1/2 an hr (Does this mean only half a human being need to stay in the room?) A lab hour is again 1/2 an hour of work (Agreed if thr r sufficient staff in the lab; now thr s a particular category of staff called lab assistant (I gs each lab has 2) in GEC;
Now this was all about the accounted workload, thr s unaccounted work....
1. study gp activities (students might feel that ur animators literally wd be sitting for such things w/o much participation, think abt their mindset, anything that is made to do on compulsion wd only look like that! Moreover 2005-2006 period probably was wn such activities wr arranged by ppl w/o any commonsense. Imagine an engr college student having a GD on "Science is a Boon"; a product marketing on water bottles and a skit on "love ur neighbours"!! Faculties do have some dignity which they adorn by being not active!
2. Project discussion: Only uneducated ppl wd say that a project guide need to just sit and listen! U claim originality and innovation at this level w/o even giving time to think abt wot s to b done... tooo bad! U talk about concentrating on project and write projects for funding when u can hardly concentrate on one project wn there are 12-13 gps under u! U talk about winning in project competitions wn u can hardly think about an original idea... Faculties are not idea generating machines and with the level of experience that faculties over here have, forget an idea, they hardly know to refer to a research journal!

3. Extra curricular activities... 4-5 is a gr8r pain in the "what-so-ever place" for faculties as for students! Imagine the concentration and dedication anyone would have after 6 hours of mntal engagement!! we are HUMAN BEINGS not MACHINES
4. Saturdays: Never gets accounted on the workload!! (As if thr s a compulsion on free service!). Thank God the church has a mass on sunday!! Else faculties wd hav to forget that they do have a family as well

THE EVALUATIONS
Faculites are being "evaluated" at various levels - students, peers and management! the funniest part is the results are being tabulated at Bihar!! Thr r a few faculties who r branded excellent (and thr r obvious reasons y they r; the students evaluation if taken as it is, would silhoutte a completely different picture), ppl who they do not want to stay are branded satisfactory or not satisfactory from their ratings (and funniest part is thr wr faculties who wr rated good n the first yr and not satisfactory in the next yr, cause that becomes a good enuf justice for throwing them out!).
The worst part of this drama is that the so called grades are read out in public (which is usually not done in any place of work), forget motivating ur staff, y demotivate if some are really keen on this profession!

THE JOB SECURITY
Hrd of anything like this? None of us (save 2 or 3) have felt such a thing exists

THE SERVICE RULES
If it exist, different for different individuals!! (BUT they proclaim aloud that AICTE rules are followed)!. If there s any cry for justice, u r made to shut up with a singular statement "Management decision, follow or quit".
Two years of probation - does it take so much of time to assess an individual? If so it is only ur inefficiency! Salary - not in dungeons but not so much to be happy either!!
Written rules? Never, it is all convinience of time!

And finally thr is a difference of approach u shd adopt to treat the educated individuals who is taking their time and knowledge to educate your children and in the way you treat the casual labours who work on ur farmland! (ED2 is far far far better in this respect)

THE CONFIDENCE
No other place of work wd be as saddist a place as SCET is... If u do not have a confidence about the people that u r hiring y bother run an institution like this?
Faculties have to prove their credibility each day each hour on a duty report (you aint paying any of us on an hourly basis), it was enough till last month that you had to sign on the register twice a day (again not applicable to all, u wd hav noticed select faculties comin n leavin at their own convinience); now u hav to mark ur presence wt ur thumb. Hello thr s no decent conveyance available to this hell hole to jump in and jump out of our conviniences! Why bother such a strict vigil then?

LEAVES
12 casual leaves per year which goes into thin air as parties announce harthals.... If thr s a single faculty w/o a loss of pay in a year... it simply means " Man u seriously need a psycho consultation; Thr is something called life!"

STAFF MEETINGS
Should be made to call staff announcements cause a meeting is wn u hav an exchange of ideas! Not wn it is a unidirectional communication nor wn U are mocked at for having opinion! Intelligent ppl observe s rule of thumb - "Silence is Golden". Well dear Mr Joseph, ur colleagues keeping quite and listening to u is only because they are forced to attend and because they have good patience!! (I wd like to recollect one incident here once; he threatened to leave the meeting and go from the institute if faculties would not vocally agree to his rule on the language stuff. Faculties kept mum and he had no option but leave; thanks to the staff secretary who saved his face on that day).

STAFF TOURS
Any tour for that matter is appreciated wn it is not compelled! When ur leave is gone for not attending, who the hell wd not join? It is not because we want to, U keep such events during vacations; there r staff from far off places who get to see their beloved ones or get time to spent wt them and are waiting for one? Any sane person wd want his family first

HIGHER EDUCATION
U want ur staff to have a better degree!! And look at the conditions u put for that!! Well u shd be contended wt the correspondence MTechs and Sunday school PhDs that your "beloved" staff bring to u! Even u get higher degrees on good payments, dont have to attend classes nor got to do any thesis :) Well b proud abt ur staff who-ever is doing so! Any one who respects his dignity and has the calibre for a good degree wd only quit or stay under educated! Education for the sake of it is not what is expected from a teacher to be frank!

PROMOTIONS
As per one of the promoted faculty "Only crying babies get milk"! Well dignity is something that cd be inherited or acquired! Any self respecting individual wd quit (ample examples) before they have to bend their knees to get what they deserve! Now thr s also another side to this coin!! Thr r also examples of dignitaries who have threatened the management for a higher post (doesnt work all time)

GETTING SPIED
Yes we too are!! Here again thr r appointed members of the supporting-staff who r engaged in spying at wot out of the world things faculties do!! Dear corporates, too cheap a trick and pls do it wt some finesse, send them atleast to some acting classes!! Their spying us is right on our face!!

Just to let u know how annoying u are to begin with.

First of all let me tell the readers what the faculties in this college have to put up with…..This is for students, faculties, outsiders and if luck is on our side, AICTE members….

From a faculty to ED2(2)
BTECH HOLDERS
- Are called Lecturers
- Have to handle 2 labs and one subject.
- EXTRA WORK ALLOTTED IN THIS COLLEGE:
- Have to take care of labs that are allotted to them
- Have to do the work of grade1 and grade2 lab assistants.
- Have to engage tutorial hours.
- Have to animate a group of 20 students,
- write down their personal and professional details in a book
-Conduct group activity on all Fridays.
- Do the extra work that is allotted to each faculty
Eg: Exam cell work, Association in charge, Camera in charge,
discipline in charge, Series test paper collection, Seminar in
Charge, project in charge for each batch etc
- Guide 2 to 3 groups of project groups from each batch.
- Take responsibilities on all auspicious days and functions in college.
- Exam duty for series test and university exams.


From a faculty to ED2(3)
MTECH HOLDERS
- Are called Assistant Professors.
- Have to handle 2 subjects and 1 lab
- Sometimes made the HOD or HOD in charge if no other PhD holders are
there in the department. They have to be there from 9 to 5.
- EXTRA WORK ALLOTTED IN THIS COLLEGE:
- Have to engage tutorial hours.
- Have to animate a group of 20 students,
- write down their personal and professional details in a book
-Conduct group activity on all Fridays.
- Do the extra work that is allotted to each faculty
Eg: Magazine in charge, College union in charge, discipline in charge.
- Guide 2 to 3 project groups from each batch.
- Exam duty for series test and university exams.

From a faculty to ED2(4)
TESTING OF TOLERANCE LEVEL
- No good training given before joining. No good senior faculties to ask for help or
guidance with the subject because everybody just wants to leave this place after
completing one year of service. The common welfare fund that is deducted every
month from our salary will be returned only after completing one year of service
- Have to manage a lab without a lab assistant.
- Shouted at if classes are left free.
- Expected to be punctual in every class even if authorities come late for every
Staff meeting.
- Shouted at in front of the staff if we say any valid point or suggestion.
- We have to attend every staff tour whether we want to or not and forced to laugh at the vulgar jokes and comments passed at us by the so called ED in “thani thara malayalam”.

- Given 12 casual leaves which are not considered on the days of hartal or public bandhs. After that loss of pay.
- Reduction of DA from 55% to 20% when basic pay increased as per AICTE rules.

- On top of this without talking to us or having a discussion, a circular comes around that we have to buy a 50 Rs stamp paper on which in our handwritings we have to agree to the terms and conditions as follows:

- “I hereby declare that I am happy with my work here and do not wish for any increment in salary. I am satisfied with the remuneration that I get from this college. I hereby agree to follow all the rules and regulations of the college without questioning the authorities”

- Amidst all of this we are expected to take our MTECH and PhD within 5
years of service so that we can live and die here in this college with angel’s blessings. For God’s sake we have our families to take care of at home. We expect better increments and salaries for our work and performance. Don’t you people know
that certain things will change with time?






SOME OF THE + POINTS FROM ALL THIS
- Thanks a lot for not allotting us the work of securities in the college.
- We learned to be 1000 times better tolerant individuals. We at least
have the courtesy not to do the same treatment to our students.
- We learned how to avoid the authorities as much as possible.
- Learned how to glue our tongues inside and keep quite even if we have a
suggestion to make. What an atmosphere to exchange ideas and views
openly and in a healthy manner! There are so many who listen around here.
- Some of us learned how to disobey the rules as much as the students try
to do.
- Yes there will be lots of changes the next year. Almost half of the
faculties will leave and new ones will arrive.
- We learned how not to take what the so called Executive director is saying
too seriously and leave all the work in the responsible hands of our
principal. Believe it or not, he’s the only one good around here. We truly
believe that it would benefit us if we listen to him. I thank u sir for showing
some amount of humanly response towards us.

Hats off to u. You have acquired some of the good qualities of ED1. Now
we miss him a lot in this campus. Maybe because he is still praying for us
somewhere far away that this college still has its name. He was one of a kind.

More Faculty - WE ARE WITH YOU
KEEP UP THE WOPRK- BLESSINGS OF ALL FACULTY IS WITH YOU!!!

No Medical benefits/ESI/ No maternity benefits

No PF as per Government sanctioned rates. They do not allows us to withdraw and do not deposit to Government PF hence the faculty does not get any Income tax benefits

No holidays. For AICTE purposes they say they give us 4 weeks but you can take only 14 days INCLUDING Saturday and Sunday!!! Rest can be claimed after five years at half the salary value !! Who wants to claim....who has stayed for five years...give us our 4 weeks!! (GEC, Trichur gets 2 months and IIT faculty gets 3 months other private engineering colleges get 4 weeks to 6 weeks paid holidays)
Sahrdaya salary is nowhere as good as other colleges now. And so many faculties ahve gone to other colleges as they get better salary/ less tension/ more holidays and less work/ NO stupid Group Discussion daily work report and other forms of demeaning faculty as the management here does

The ONAM Bonus- Non Existent. For Christmas a 100 rupee saree / 75 ruppee shirt piece or curtain material given wrapped by the bishop or ED2!! Thank you SOOOOOO much!!

Faculty meeting are announcements. No one is bothered about improving the college or education.

No elder faculty has EVER stayed here. No retired faculty stays in Sahrdaya ..why..they are SOOO bad. Every engineering collegein kerala has got experienced, retired staff. No one has come or has satyed with the stupid management here!!!.. Very soon only old students will teach here. And the average age inS ahrdaya of faculty is 23. And 85% girls or married ladies who do this as part-time work as no serious career man will stay for the foolish laws here.
Unlike ED1 now ED2 has no concern for getting better lab facilities or improving facility. ONLY landscaping and other nonsense!! This college is for education not for landscaping!!

Evaluation...for a change why cant we evaluate the MANGEMENT anonymously !! They are too frightened and cannot take ANY form of criticism!!!



FROM MR.SAMUEL,NOW WORKING IN MUNNAR ENGINEERING COLLEGE





the difference that i felt (from a faculty persp.)
i'll give an account of the difference that i felt b'ween sahrdaya n the current college that im working(College of Engg. Munnar). i'd typed this 1 yr back. now im just cutting n pasting. this was typed in nov2006.


the difference i feel b'ween sahrdaya n here is that here apart fm academics, both management n students don't expect anything else fm us.
faculties rarely get to see principal. they mostly deal with HoDs.
work time is fm 9am-4pm. but, if need arise we can leave a bit early or arrive a little late. also we can leave for maybe paying gas bill or electricity bill n return back after 1/2 hrs. sat/sun holiday.
therz only 2 series tests here, n during those days classes r suspended with each series test consuming 5 days (ie, 2 exams per day), which actually makes series test conduction n faculty allocation a very easy job. as each series test is for 2 hrs, the questions r invariably of a better standard than at sahrdaya.

the difference that i felt (from a faculty persp)2
if at all therz extra work during sat/sun, like conducting of lab series test, which i did 2 weeks back, we are entitled to take compensatory leave on a working day. we can take a working thu/fri as leave n take a 4-day rest at home. in sahrdaya, such a thing is given depending on the faculty. for eg, if a newcomer asks 4 compensation leave, itz immediately rejected. & no faculties r entitled to get compensation for going with students on tour on sat/sun at sahrdaya.
here all govt. holidays r given as leave. apart from that for onam/x'mas etc we're entitled to 10-day holiday alongwith students.
apart from all these, we're entitled to 2 month vacation during may/june unlike the 14-day vacation thatz given as a pittance at sahrdaya (that too on a split basis). but, ive seen many faculties at sahrdaya not availing the vacation, thus giving an impression to management that vacation is not needed for faculties.

the difference that i felt (from a faculty persp)3
apart from all these, all faculties n employees here at members of CEMEU (College of Engg Munnar Employees Union), affiliated to CITU, thr' which faculties hav the right to collectively bargain n organize for their rights, unlike at sahrdaya where the management is the main constituent of Staff Welfare Fund which is said to have been formed for the welfare of faculties, but actually controlled by the management through some unmarried female science/maths stream faculties who in the long term is more detrimental to other faculties than the management.
n, then there is no faculty orientaion programme organized during holidays here. but, therz a yoga practice session for faculties after 4pm. but, participation in that is optional. non-participation in anything is not considered as a crime unlike there.
apart from all these, the main advantage is varied profile of students. students here r not confined to a specific region or diocese or community, which is the case there (which enabled the management at sahrdaya to create a wedge between students n faculties by giving an impression to students that faculties r their servants). as faculties here don't interfere in matters of students here, therz a better respect for faclties, so far as ive seen.

the good points of sahrdaya (that i felt)
but, that is not to say that there r no good points at sahrdaya.
one of the very good point was that faculties don't hav 2 worry about anything like opening a bank account or tax calculation (n paying) or being served tea at regular intervals or taking photostat (here, itz not free or personal purpose) or facility-wise (like projectors in all classes, automated attandance registering process). sahrdaya has 4 branches compared to 3 here (remember that sahrdaya has just 5 yrs of track-record to 7 yrs here). the total bulk of the college is more in case of sahrdaya (maybe b'coz sahrdaya can charge exhorbitantly high capitation fees for payment seats compared to CEM which can only charge the fee prescribed by govt.).
i was just mentioning a few differences b'ween the 2 colleges.

another difference that i felt
this is regarding orkut usage.
most of the students here at CEM, when they create an orkut profile invariably give the photo of their face on their profile.
but, at sahrdaya, they give only after passing out of the college.
ie, when they study at sahrdaya, they tend to see themselves as faceless, anonymous creatures, who don't have any identity.
u can see the users of this community. how many have given their real names n photo on their comments? in fact none. n, that include faculties.
